PENANG Free School showed their  supremacy in hockey again when they recently added another title to the two already won this year.

In August, the school's senior players retained the Penang Schools Sports Council-Penang State Hockey Association Boys' Under-18 title defeating Mutiara Impian Sports School to lift the Datuk Ow Soon Kooi Challenge trophy.

Hot on the heels of their seniors' success, the Boys' Under-14 team then bagged the High Performance School Sports title the following month.

The Under-14 Boys were on cloud nine again when they defeated Mutiara Impian Sports School 5-4 after a penalty shoot-out to lift the Penang Schools Sports Council title at the Mutiara Impian Sports School in Simpang Ampat, Seberang Perai Selatan recently.

The Free School lads did not concede a single goal on their way to the final, having beaten SMK Bakti 3-0, SM Sains Kepala Batas 6-0 and SMK Bukit Mertajam 7-0, and in the semi-final they thrashed SMK Jawi 7-0.

In the final, they took an early lead through a field goal by Mohd Syarul Nizam but the sports school boys equalised and forced the match into a golden-goal extra time.

With no goals from the extended time, the game went into a penalty shoot-out.

"We are very proud that Penang Free School won both the titles contested under the Penang Schools Sports Council banner," said coach Mohd Nazrin Saidon

With all available silverware in their cabinet, the school has already started preparations to defend the three titles next year, with arch rivals Mutiara Impian seeking revenge.

"It is easier to win but not as easy to defend the titles next year, especially when the state sports school gets the majority of the state's Under-12 players.

"Therefore I can only have high praise for our boys who have shown their more illustrious opponents that with hard work, determination and belief, anything is possible," added Mohd Nazrin. - NST
